In honor of The Jewish Museum’s centennial year, contemporary artists and designers, Lyn Godley, Chunghi Choo, and Karim Rashid, were specially commissioned to create Judaica for the Museum’s collection. These innovative objects of Jewish ritual exemplify the Museum’s commitment to keeping Judaica accessible and vital to contemporary life. Godley created a joyous and monumental Hanukkah lamp that captured the essence of kindling the holiday lights. According to tradition, the number of lights is increased each night, from one to eight, as a reminder that the miracle became greater over time. In Godley’s interpretation, nine different sources of light are used in a cumulative fashion. Beginning with a flame-like light of the shamash, the first ‘candle’ consists of the flame and a second type of light source. The number and variety of light sources increases each night sot that on the last day of the holiday all nine types of illumination are blazing. Flicker bulbs, backlit sculpted vinyl, electroluminescent panels, fiber optics, electroluminescent wire, vinyl overlay diffuser panels, LED lights, backlit digital imagery, light bulbs and rope lighting. 156”W x 72”H
